60 minutes – Zoom
Limited to the first 15 Participants
Do you sometimes find yourself leading your client to an answer?
Would you like better questions to broach sensitive topics?
Do you wonder what to say when you think your client is wrong?
Would you like to ask questions that are warm, but not patronizing? Clear and direct, but not offensive? Empathetic, but not pathologizing?
Do you wish you had some go-to questions for first sessions?
This workshop is about formulating better questions. It’s about how to go from case conceptualization to finding the right words. It’s about turning a topic or idea into a specific question.
Stephen Mayo (president of The Questions Company) and Stacey Mayo (LMFT and co-owner of Garden City Center) will lead this interactive workshop to give you techniques and approaches you can put in practice immediately.
In this workshop we will:
Discover 5 Keys for asking powerful questions
Examine sample questions for some of the most common activities in a session:
Help the client choose a session topic
Gather history and information
Ask for clarification
Offer validation and empathy
Challenge the client
Discuss why these tactics are effective and why the framework elevates the session
Look at how to avoid common pitfalls
Asking leading questions
Offending the client
Dominating the conversation
Speaking too little
You’ll walk away with more confidence, more questions at your fingertips, and a 1-pager for handy reference.

Stacey Mayo is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and co-owner of Garden City Center. She has been practicing as a therapist for 10 years and knows first-hand that questions are an essential part of the clinical work. Sometimes she struggles to figure out how to ask what she wants to ask. She has stories of times when she fumbled, offended, or colluded with a client. It’s been a relief to discover there are techniques for asking better questions, and with practice she’s become more confident about planning her client sessions and having solid questions to ask.
